🚀 A huge THANK YOU to The Petit Family Foundation for sponsoring our out-of-this-world visit from the Space Foundation ! 🌙✨
Our entire TMA community had the incredible opportunity to learn, explore, and invent alongside real astro scientists from Colorado Springs. The experience kicked off with a hands-on experiment called Magnetic Moon Mining where our upper students worked together to discover how to ethically and efficiently mine magnetic materials on the Moon. 🛠️🌌
Not to be left out, our lower students joined the fun with a space-themed trivia activity and an interactive Q&A session! 🚀💫
We’re so grateful our TMA students were able to have this stellar experience! 🌠

🌟 TMA Weekly Wrap-Up: Exploring Acids & Bases! 🌟
This week in Suites 4 & 5, our curious young scientists in Mrs. Robert`s Chemistry Lab dove into the exciting world of acids and bases! 🧪🔬 The students conducted hands-on experiments to discover the properties of common household substances and determine whether they were acids or bases.
The lab included testing various materials such as:
-Borax
-Soap
-Water
-Seltzer
-Vinegar
-Hydrogen Peroxide
By using pH indicators and observing reactions, the students got to see firsthand how different substances interact and whether they lean more acidic or basic. 🤔 From vinegar`s tartness to soap`s cleaning power, they learned why acids tend to have that sour taste and why bases are often found in household cleaners! 🧼✨
This hands-on activity tied perfectly with our recent lessons on the differences between acids and bases, exploring not only their chemical properties but also how they impact our everyday lives.
It`s always exciting to see our students engaged and making real-world connections in science. Stay tuned for more updates on their learning adventures! 🚀

🎉 Congratulations to Talcott alum Dr. Eric R. Fossum – National Medal of Technology and Innovation Recipient! 🎉
Dr. Fossum`s groundbreaking work in inventing camera-on-a-chip technology has revolutionized the way we capture images, turning billions of phones into powerful cameras and transforming everyday life in the process. His innovation is now an integral part of many industries, from healthcare and business to entertainment and security. 🌍📱
Dr. Fossum received this prestigious honor on January 3, 2025, directly from President Biden via OSTP Director Dr. Arati Prabhakar at a ceremony at the White House. It’s an amazing and humbling recognition of his lifelong dedication to innovation and his contributions to science and technology. 🤩
When NASA needed a smaller, more efficient camera for space exploration, Dr. Fossum’s groundbreaking image sensor technology was the solution. Since then, he`s continued to push the boundaries of what`s possible, and now mentors countless young entrepreneurs, inspiring the next generation of innovators. 🚀💡
We are so proud to call Eric a Talcott Mountain Science Center alum, and his achievements remind us all that Talcott alumni change the world. 🌟

🌟 TMSC Faculty Spotlight: Meet Jennifer Orifice! 🌟
We’re thrilled to shine a light on Jennifer Orifice, one of our amazing Suite I & II teachers at Talcott Mountain Science Center & Academy!
Miss Orifice (or Miss O.) has always had a passion for learning. As a child, she loved playing teacher during summer break and even recorded her piggy bank savings on ledger paper! While she initially chose to study accounting, her love of teaching eventually led her to pursue education. At Talcott, she combines her love of numbers and curiosity with hands-on learning, helping students discover the joy of math, spreadsheets, and science exploration. She loves that Talcott encourages everyone to raise their “nerd flag” proudly!
✨ What does Miss Orifice love about teaching at Talcott?
“I get to teach students who are excited to share in their learning—it’s a place where curiosity and enthusiasm for knowledge are celebrated.”
🌍 Her advice for young science lovers?
“Never stop wondering and asking questions about how AND why the universe works. Your questions will lead to new learning and maybe even new discoveries.”
🎉 Fun facts about Ms. Orifice:
She’s an avid outdoors enthusiast who loves hiking, yoga, and being by the water. And what better way to enjoy the outdoors than to run? To date, Miss O. has run four marathons, over ten half marathons, and more than 100 other races! These days, she keeps her running to one race a year and has picked up a new hobby—tap dancing! Oh, and did we mention she has 16 nieces and nephews… and counting?
Drop a shoutout to Miss Orifice in the comments and let her know how much we appreciate her dedication and passion for education! 💙
