What’s happening on the mountain
This afternoon, students at Talcott Mountain Academy took part in the ARRL School Club Roundup, operating under the call sign W1TMS. This event provided a fantastic opportunity for students to showcase their skills and connect with fellow FCC-licensed Amateur Radio School Club stations, as well as non-school radio clubs and individual amateur radio operators.
Amateur Radio, also known as Ham Radio, is a valuable technology that offers endless learning opportunities for our students. It not only fosters communication skills but also teaches students about electronics, engineering, and emergency preparedness. By participating in the ARRL School Club Roundup, students get to explore the fascinating world of amateur radio and establish connections with individuals and institutions from all levels of education. From elementary schools to prestigious universities like M.I.T. and beyond, this event is a chance for our students to showcase their proficiency and passion for radio communication. It was an afternoon of excitement, learning, and making new friends — near and far. ๐ป #AmateurRadio #ARRLSchoolClubRoundup #W1TMS #TalcottMountainAcademy

For students in Suite B — it`s the perfect time of year to learn about chemistry by mixing potions! ๐๐ฎ
Here`s what they`re gaining from this magical experience:
๐ฌ Exploration: These young minds are learning about the concept of mixtures and solutions. They`re experimenting with different substances, observing how they interact, and drawing conclusions about what happens when you mix certain ingredients. It`s like being wizards in the lab!
๐ Creativity: Mixing potions encourages students to think outside the box. They`re inventing their very own recipes, using a range of colorful and interesting materials. This sparks creativity, imagination, and a love for learning.
๐งช Observation Skills: While concocting their magical brews, students are honing their observation skills. They`re watching for changes in color, texture, and more, and making notes about what they see. It`s science in action!
๐ Math Concepts: As they measure ingredients, they`re sneakily building their math skills. It`s all about proportions and understanding the importance of precise measurements. Math can be magical, too!
๐ค Collaboration: Teamwork is a vital lesson. They`re sharing ideas, working together, and helping each other out in the laboratory. Learning to collaborate is an essential skill that goes beyond the chemistry classroom.
๐ฑ Curiosity & Critical Thinking: These young potion-makers are asking questions like "What happens if I mix this with that?" and developing their critical thinking abilities. They`re learning that it`s okay to be curious and to seek answers.
Our students had a blast while discovering the fascinating world of chemistry. Who knew that mixing potions could be so educational and fun?! ๐ฎ๐ซ

Writing a book can be challenging for students of any age — but imagine also having to write it in a foreign language AND illustrate it yourself! Students in Suites 1 & 2 tapped into their imaginations to craft a story about a trip to the zoo — writing the narrative in Spanish and creatively illustrating the pages themselves. Once the books were completed, they shared them with students in Suite A (reading them in Spanish, of course!). Muy impresionante! #reading #creativity #talcottscience #writing
