Talcott Mountain Research Institute Receives Petit Family Foundation Grant to Support STEM Research & Education

The Talcott Mountain Research Institute (TMRI) is honored to receive a generous grant from the Petit Family Foundation in support of its STEM research and education initiatives. This funding will help expand opportunities for students to engage in advanced scientific research, collaborate with mentors, and participate in innovative educational experiences designed to inspire the next generation of STEM leaders.

For more than 60 years, Talcott Mountain Science Center, Academy, & Research Institute has empowered curious and advanced learners through immersive STEM programming. Today, TMRI continues that legacy by connecting high school, undergraduate, and graduate students with meaningful research opportunities and mentorship from college and university faculty.

“We are grateful for the support from the Petit Family Foundation,” shared Dr. Jay White, Director of TMRI. “With this grant, we’ll be able to expand the work we’ve been doing for six decades into new areas of STEM research and education, as well as state-level research initiatives.”

TMRI extends its sincere gratitude to the Petit Family Foundation and Dr. William A. Petit, Jr. for their continued support of STEM education and student research opportunities.

Dr. William A. Petit, Jr.: Good morning. Dr. Bill Petit here with Dr. Jay White from the Talcott Mountain Science Center and Research Institute. They’ve recently been awarded a grant in our spring grant cycle, and I’d like Jay to share more about the Talcott Mountain Research Institute and how these funds will be utilized. Congratulations!

Dr. Jay White: Thank you very much, Bill. We really appreciate the support.  For more than 60 years, Talcott Mountain has been working with students through STEM-focused programs, including after-school activities, summer programs, and the Talcott Mountain Academy for gifted K-8 students. More recently, we launched the Research Institute, which serves high school students, undergraduate students, and graduate students. With this grant, we’ll be able to expand the work we’ve been doing for six decades into new areas of STEM education and research, as well as state-level research initiatives.

Dr. William A. Petit, Jr.: You’ll also have a lecture series associated with the initiative.

Dr. Jay White: Yes. In fact, the first lecture in our “On the Shoulders of Giants” lecture series takes place this evening. We also offer a summer research program for advanced high school students. Thanks to support from the Petit Family Foundation, we’re able to welcome students from across New England to work alongside college and university professors on a variety of research projects this summer.

Dr. William A. Petit, Jr.: Thank you for supporting STEM, especially for young women. Fantastic.

Dr. Jay White: More than half of the students in the summer program are young women, which we’re very excited about. Thank you.
