Perseids Party @ TMSCA
August 11 @ 8:30 pm – 11:59 pm
Come view this year’s annual Perseid Meteor Shower from the mountain campus of Talcott Mountain Science Center & Academy!
Normally one of the year’s best meteor showers, “the Perseids” appear as streaks in our August skies when Earth passes through the dusty debris path of Comet Swift-Tuttle. A nearly 1st-quarter Moon will set at 11:00pm on the 11th. Perseid Party! participants will watch moonset from the Mountain and after that will have a clear and dark view of the sky. In addition to the Perseids, the night will hold other celestial delights like summer constellations, the heart of the Milky Way Galaxy, and Saturn. TMSCA’s main telescope will be used to give participants views of various objects.
Gates will open at 8:00pm, and the introductory information session in the TMSCA Planetarium will occur at 8:30pm (for safety, no vehicles will be admitted after 9:00pm) Bring blankets or beach towels, lawn chairs, and bug repellent. For maximum comfort, please wear comfortable shoes. Attendees will encounter some hills and uneven terrain on our mountaintop campus.

NOTE: Can’t join us on Talcott Mountain? You can watch the Perseids on your own. Find a dark location away from confounding lights, and pick a spot that gives you a wide view of the night sky. The Perseids, numbering this year 50-100 per hour, will appear to emanate from the direction of the constellation Perseus, although the meteors can appear anywhere in the sky.
