SUMMARY:A Bite of the Sun: Solar Eclipse Viewing on Talcott Mtn.
DESCRIPTION:Hold the afternoon of April 8th for a special event on Talcott Mountain! Register below to receive word of updates here on the website for our eclipse festival “A Bite of the Sun: Solar Eclipse Viewing on Talcott Mountain.” \n  \nPut a * on your calendar for April 8th! \nA dramatic astronomical event happens in mid-afternoon on Monday\, 8 April 2024. Estimates are that several hundred million people in North American will that day experience some part of a solar eclipse\, with approximately 32 million directly in the path of the Moon’s shadow as it sweeps from northern Mexico through the United States’ Midwest and across its northeast. Those in this “path of totality” will witness a total solar eclipse as the Moon’s shadow sweeps over them—its disk completely covering the Sun for approximately four minutes. \nWe in Connecticut will not be in the path of totality for April’s eclipse\, but\, if skies are clear\, we will be able to observe a deep partial solar eclipse—for us in the Hartford area\, more than 93% of the Sun’s diameter will be covered by the Moon. We Connecticuters will have to wait until 2078 for the next such deep partial solar eclipse and until 2079 for a total solar eclipse visible from here. \nA Festival named “A Bite of the Sun” \nWe at Talcott Mountain Science Center & Academy wish to connect us here on the Mountain with those in the greater community and offer us all a setting to experience the celestial splendor of the upcoming solar eclipse. \nWe will conduct a free public learning festival we are calling the “A Bite of the Sun: Solar Eclipse Viewing on Talcott Mountain.” During the afternoon of Monday the 8th\, we plan to open our campus and invite individuals and small groups to join us in TMSCA-conducted activities related to eclipse. Included in the slate of anticipated activities are: \n\n“Nature-Made Eclipse” informational sessions in the TMSCA Planetarium\nEclipse safety informational sessions in the TMSCA Planetarium\nHands-on activity stations with eclipse- and general-science-related activities\nStations on safe solar imaging (incl. “making a pinhole camera”)\nRealtime feed in the Planetarium of the eclipse from a location in the path of totality\nRealtime announcements across the TMSCA campus of eclipse updates\n\nTHIS EVENT HAS REACHED CAPACITY.\nAdd your name to the waitlist and we’ll contact you if space opens up.\n\n \nThank you to the following for supporting this event: \n \n    \n \n*Photo credit: Exploratorium

Join Astronomer John Natale in the Talcott Mountain Science Center (TMSC) Planetarium to learn about the basics of astrophotography and how he learned the art of photographing the night sky on his own. This presentation will focus on techniques and equipment for the beginner. Deep sky\, planetary and lunar photography will be covered\, and photographs of each will be shown. Tips for achieving high quality images will be shared\, along with lessons learned. \nWeather permitting\, attendees will be able to access Talcott’s telescopes and observatories to view the night sky from the ridge atop Talcott Mountain. \n$25/Adults (Ages 14+)\n$15/Children (Under 14) \nPURCHASE TICKETS ONLINE\n———— \nJohn Natale is an amateur astronomer from East Haddam\, and has been involved with the astrophotography hobby for about 2 years. He became interested in astronomy in 2020 after retiring from the U.S. Coast Guard and State of Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection. John has an undergraduate degree in biology and a master’s degree in oceanography from the University of Connecticut\, and is a member of the Thames Amateur Astronomical Society and the Astronomical Society of New Haven. He has published astrophotography articles in Connecticut Magazine\, the Shoreline Times\, the Hartford Courant and other local Connecticut newspapers. \nPhoto Caption: John Natale made this image of the Orion Nebula (aka Messier 42). Known as the middle “star” in the “sword” of Orion\, it’s south of Orion’s Belt and is one of the brightest nebulae in the night sky.
